This week's announcement by Arlen Specter changed the dynamics of the Pennsylvania Senate race, but it did not change one basic fact: We will retire Arlen Specter, even if we have to do it in a general election.
In the last 48 hours, hundreds of you have contributed to our cause through ToomeyforSenate.com. Our campaign is growing stronger than ever before thanks to this surge of support, but we aren't done yet.
Can you make an online contribution so I can keep taking this fight directly to Arlen Specter?
Arlen Specter showed his true colors this week. He has always voted like a Democrat, and now he is one. His decision clarifies the choice for Pennsylvanians: an unchecked 60-seat liberal majority to run up mountains of debt, or an opposition that is strong and principled enough to stand up for future generations and restore America to fiscal sanity?
I made the decision to challenge Arlen Specter because I knew that Republican Party could not become another Democratic Party -- blindly spending trillions more in taxpayer dollars. I am more determined than ever to see this fight through to the finish.
To do it, I need you with me.
Arlen Specter's decision raises the stakes of this race. President Obama has pledged to do everything he can to get Arlen Specter re-elected so he can have a total liberal majority in Washington for years to come. Only you stand in their way.
I am ready for this fight. Are you?
If so, I hope you'll join me today.
Sincerely,
Pat Toomey
P.S. Last month, Arlen Specter told us, "I am staying a Republican because I think I have an important role, a more important role, to play there. The United States very desperately needs a two-party system. That's the basis of politics in America." Now, he has left the GOP to save his own political career, putting himself before what he himself said the country "desperately needs." I will be a Senator who always puts Pennsylvania and our country before self, but first, I need your support to defeat Arlen Specter.
